Injecting a Daily Dose of Fun into your Coaching Style

Posted on 5/4/2018

When your reputation earns you the nickname, “Fun Master”, you’re the person everyone wants to be around.  This is the reality of Randy Parrish - Flip Fest entertainer, coach, presenter, Tumbl Trak Ambassador and all-around good guy.

In his wife’s gym in South Carolina, Randy has a coaching style that gets results without taking himself too seriously. For the same reason people flock to him, (literally - if you’ve ever been to a National Congress, just look for the crowd), his athletes are inspired to be in the gym and work hard because Randy makes it fun to be there.

Punishment in Coaching Part Three: Alternatives to Punishment

Posted on 4/9/2018

In the classes I teach at Wichita State University we discuss why athlete’s dropout of sports.  What I hear from my students, who are mostly former and current athletes, is their love of a sport or decision to drop out of a sport was largely affected by the behavior of a coach.  Losing passion for a sport was often tied to spiteful or revengeful punishment by a coach.  Here are comments I get in regard to this type of coaching.

A Parent’s view of our nation’s treasures

Contributor: Carrie Spender, Tumbl Trak Education Coordinator

In my home, one of my most prized possessions is this US Olympic Team Flag.  It travels with me on all of my Tumbl Trak adventures, and accompanies my girls to their meets and camps in the hopes we will meet an Olympian who might honor us by adding their name to our treasure.

Every day, from the flag hanging in our living room, Jordyn, Bart, Elise, Shannon, Bridget, Kim, and 35 others remind us of the strength, grace and perseverance of extraordinary human beings...and the desire to pursue gymnastics dreams.

Positive Coaching by Doug Davis

Posted on 2/6/2018
Some of you may remember the Choose Your Habits Clinics we offered a few years back.  They were a series of free educational sessions held across the country, hosted by Tumbl Trak in celebration of our 25th Anniversary.  Much of the vision for these clinics came from our founder, Doug Davis, whose philosophy of positive coaching, safe progressions and valuable education has been the cornerstone of the work we do at Tumbl Trak. Parent Tip: "Thank you, Coach"

At the end of every practice, my daughters huddle up with their team and start their clap happy, roaring team cheer.  Then, a stampede of athletes head to their lockers to retrieve shoes, coats and backpacks.  But the part of the “end of practice routine” that I love the most is the sweet gesture that each athlete leaves the gym giving earnest thanks to their coaches...“Thank you, Coach Kelle.  Thank you, Coach Sierra”.  And, that each time, the coaches respond with kindness and gratitude as well.
